Funerary area outside the “Porta Decumana”
Last update: 15 February 2023, 11:49
WHERE: in Battaglione Aosta avenue.
HISTORY: as expected by the Roman law, the necropolis stood outside the city. The remains of this important burial area were in fact found about 200 meters away from the “Porta Decumana”. The necropolis was used for a long time, both in Roman and early Christian times: the presence of pagan and Christian burials was quite usual, as well as very similar rites were connected with the cult of the dead.
In the area there are three mausoleums and an early Christian basilica. For the latter, strong similarities are evident with Christian buildings built on Roman necropolis outside the walls, such as the San Lorenzo Church and the Church of Santo Stefano. The site has had a long period of use, roughly up to the end of the first millennium, when its gradual abandonment began.
