MAR - The Regional Archaelogical Museum

Last update: 15 February 2023, 11:50

WHERE: 12, Roncas square.

INFORMATION: The exhibition is spread over a path relative to the presence of man in the Aosta Valley, from prehistory to the Middle Ages. The visit is organized chronologically and, thanks to a new layout, there are a number of interactive multimedia features. The prehistorical times are witnessed by finds from the megalithic area of Saint-Martin-de-Corléans, while the spaces dedicated to the Roman era deepen Augusta Praetoria, funeral rites, epigraphy, cults and other characteristic dimensions of Empire. The exhibition concludes with rooms dedicated to the advent of Christianity and the Middle Ages. On the website of the Regional Administration, which owns the museum, a specific section allows a virtual tour.
You can find more information on MAR web site.
The Museum is housed in a building that stands where, at the time of Augusta Praetoria, rose the “Porta Principalis Sinistra”. Partly transformed into a medieval fortress, in 1633 it became the Visitation Monastery of the order of St. Jeanne de Chantal. In 1802, in the Napoleonic era, the nuns were removed to obtain barracks, called firstly "Visitation" and , later, Challant.
At the same venue, in addition to the permanent exhibition of the Regional Archaeological Museum, retrospectives are held according to a schedule that can be consulted on these web pages.
