Leper's Tower
Last update: 15 February 2023, 11:46
WHERE: in Torre del Lebbroso street, at the cross road with Festaz street.
HISTORY: Built in the Middle Ages on the basis of a Roman fortress, the tower was occupied by the noble family Friour, before moving on to the nobles Pléoz. Been abandoned for a long time, it became known as the "Tour du lépreux" (the Leper’s Tower), because between 1773 and 1803 there was imprisoned leper Pietro Bernardo Guasco. During his "stay" in the tower, he met the Savoyard writer Xavier de Maistre, who was inspired by the story for his book "Le lépreux de la Cité d'Aoste" (1811). Currently not open to visitors, it has been for years the seat of art exhibitions.
